I read the entire manuscript, cover to cover. I give you a frank letter detailing what is working well and what needs work. Nothing sweetened and nothing brutal.
Get this before you query agents. Agents politely say no without telling you why. I will tell you why, long before they even get their hands on it. This is also the proper thing to do if you are planning on self-publishing. Or if you've read your book so many times the words have stopped making sense. I get that feeling.
I focus on the big picture stuff. Is there a solid story? Are the characters believable? Where are the weak spots in the pacing? Are the opening chapters up to snuff to withstand an agent's Monday morning inbox?
